In Love and War: A Veterans Day Tale

Howard and Rita Dean Park Springs residents Howard and Rita Dean have lived lives straight off the big screen.

The couple’s life together began in the midst of WWII when Dean was stationed in the Philippines and Japan for over four years serving in a classified position as a radar officer with the Electronic Training Group. Shortly after the war ended, Dean returned to Manila where he was stationed working as part of an operation to help remove troops and equipment.

It was there that he met 17 year old Rita who had just spent the past four years under brutal Japanese occupation for woman and children during the war. At the time she was assisting the military in a clerical position. Dean remembers being immediately attracted to the girl he remembers as tough and intelligent. Read More→

No Shortage of Volunteers at Park Springs

PS Memory WeekWe all know that volunteering helps other people in need, but what we didn’t know is that it can also help us at the same time. A recent study presented at the American Geriatrics Society (AGS) annual meeting this summer showed that retirees over 65 who volunteer had less than half the risk of death than their non-volunteer peers. Park Springs Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) understands the importance of volunteerism and has been a strong proponent of it since opening its 54-acre campus style community in Stone Mountain, Ga. in 2004.
