As the holidays draw near, many are perfecting their wish lists and getting ready for parties and family gatherings. Some, however, are only hoping to get the necessities this year. To help girls at the North Georgia Angel House, a therapeutic foster home for girls ages 12-20, residents at Soleil Laurel Canyon in Canton have created the Angel Tree. They are “adopting” 19 girls and purchasing gifts for each one.
“The Angel House helps these young ladies be the best that they can be, and we hope we can make the holidays a little brighter for them with the gifts we’re able to provide,” said Linda Travis, a Soleil Laurel Canyon resident. She is in charge of heading up the Angel Tree project at the active adult resort style community with her husband, Mike.
The girls will receive items such as flat irons, hair dryers, bath robes, hair accessories, slippers and lip gloss.
The Travis’s have set up a small Angel Tree in the clubhouse at Soleil Laurel Canyon, and residents can select and purchase gifts for one of the 19 girls from the tree. As of December 1, all but four had been “adopted” by residents. Mrs. Travis has no doubt the other four will be adopted soon. The gifts will all be wrapped during a wrapping party hosted by the Travis’s on December 20.
The Angel Tree project is just one of the many ways the residents at Soleil Laurel Canyon are involved in the community. If living in an active adult community that shares your passion for giving back is important to you, visit Soleil Laurel Canyon and learn about the many activities the residents there have underway.
Soleil’s Got Talent Raises Money for Community
By · Comments
Active adult residents at Soleil Laurel Canyon recently presented Soleil’s Got Talent. The show was a great success and raised over $2,000 for the Cherokee County Volunteer Aging Council. Residents also collected non-perishable food items for the MUST Ministries food bank.
The show opened with a “Broadway Blast” medley of show tunes by the Soleil Singers, who also performed renditions of melodies from “South Pacific” and “Chicago” throughout the evening. The show was orchestrated by a witty emcee who juggled throughout the show. He presented the more than 10 additional acts, which included comedy, piano, voice, magic and dance performances from a wide variety of entertainment genres, like swing, tap, contemporary and more.
The program included the following performances by residents of the active adult community: Ernie Jarvis, a member of the Soleil Singers’ Bass section, did an old-time comedy routine based on a North Carolina mountain man by the name of Ack Adams. The Soleil Singers’ Assistant Director, Clela Roubicek, and accompanist, Ralph Russ, comprised the Soleil Piano Duo. They performed a variety of Broadway favorites and a four-hand arrangement of the “Warsaw Concerto.” Robert Stampf, a member of the Cherokee Chorale, knocked everyone out with his singing of Sinatra’s “My Way” and “New York, New York.” Mary Nell McLauchlin and Ed Ferko, Local Motion Dance Team members, performed as one of four couples doing three well-rehearsed and very well-received routines. Another member of the Bass section, Don Sungail, sang and played the keyboard to “Have I Told You Lately That I Love You.” Carol Horowitz performed a nostalgic tap dance to Gene Kelley’s “Singin’ in the Rain.” Bob Colby performed magic tricks and Al Bardakjy presented a parody to the song “Side By Side.”
Soleil Laurel Canyon’s residents cannot wait for next year’s show. For more information about living in this active adult community, please visit www.SoleilLaurelCanyon.com.
